Introduction

Servant leadership isn’t as well-known as I’d like it to be. In fact, I didn’t come across the term until my early 40s—twenty years after I began leading people. For those unfamiliar, servant leadership flips traditional leadership on its head. It prioritises the growth and well-being of people while achieving organisational success.

For me, it’s a philosophy rooted in authenticity, trust, and fairness. In this blog, I’ll share what servant leadership means to me, its pros and challenges, and real-life stories of its impact.

What Servant Leadership Means to Me

Servant leadership is about being at the base of the pyramid, supporting your team to thrive. For me, it’s defined by:

  • Listening more than speaking.

  • Building trust through consistent actions, not just words.

  • Sharing and celebrating success as a team.

These principles align closely with my personal values: resilience, curiosity, ambition, and integrity. It’s about empowering others while staying grounded in accountability and results.

The Pros of Servant Leadership

  1. Stronger Team Engagement: When people feel seen and valued, they’re more motivated. At Optix Solutions, putting employees first has led to industry-leading satisfaction scores and retention rates above 90%.

  2. Better Decision-Making: Diverse perspectives lead to better outcomes. At a FTSE 100 company, empowering frontline managers transformed customer service, resulting in award-winning improvements.

  3. Sustainable Growth: Servant leadership fosters loyalty. Optix boasts a 90%+ client retention rate in an industry where 30–40% churn is typical, proving trust builds long-term success.

Challenges: Why Servant Leadership Isn’t Always Easy

  1. It’s Time-Intensive: Supporting people takes patience. When I worked with a struggling contact centre, I spent six or seven days a week on the front line. The results were worth it, but it demanded persistence.

  2. Balancing Support and Accountability: Support doesn’t mean lowering standards. High-performing teams need trust, clear expectations, and a culture of accountability.

  3. Emotional Investment: Leading with empathy can be draining. Yet the stronger relationships and resilience built along the way are worth the effort.

Real-Life Example: Turning Around a Struggling Contact Centre

When I was asked to save a contact centre from closure, servant leadership became my guiding principle. Instead of holding meetings behind closed doors, I joined team huddles, listened to staff frustrations, and empowered managers to lead from the front.

One bold move was cancelling all manager meetings temporarily so they could spend more time with customers and their teams.

This approach didn’t just boost morale—it transformed the business. Staff satisfaction scores soared into the top three nationally, and customer Net Promoter Scores hit record highs. Over time, what was once a failing centre became a thriving one, creating hundreds of new roles.

Real-Life Example: wavemind’s Mission

With wavemind, I’ve applied these same principles to mentoring entrepreneurs. Many feel isolated or stuck in their businesses. By listening and supporting them as individuals first, I’ve seen leaders rediscover their passion and make meaningful changes.

One client said:"I don’t know what you’ve done, but our team is on fire! Whatever you’re doing, just keep doing it."

This was after just three months of coaching. Feedback like this reinforces that wavemind’s philosophy and processes drive real, transformational impact.

Why Servant Leadership Matters Now More Than Ever

In today’s fast-paced world, the pressure to deliver results often comes at the expense of people. But I believe servant leadership offers a sustainable path—one that avoids burnout while fostering success for both teams and organisations.

It’s not always easy, and it’s not for everyone. But for me, it’s the only way to lead authentically.

Closing Thoughts

Servant leadership has shaped my career and life, even before I knew the term. Whether transforming a struggling contact centre, building an award-winning agency like Optix Solutions, or mentoring through wavemind, the principles of putting people first have consistently delivered exceptional results.
